Preparing a Film Crowdfunding Campaign

In December 2015 a movie producer client of mine, Howard Burd, reached out and asked me if I'd like to join him in building his next movie project from the ground up. My ears were open given that Howard was in the midst of gearing up to launch the movie Mother's Day, directed by Garry Marshall, a few months later. Howard is developing a movie, Notorious Nick, based on the life story of "Notorious" Nick Newell, an MMA champion with a 13-1 professional record, who was born with a congenital amputation on his left arm which means he only has one full hand on his right side. A fierce fighter with a gentle soul whose story is as inspiring as any sports drama, before you even consider his limb difference.
We now have an amazing team in place (co-producer Mark DiSalle (Bloodsport, Perfect Weapon), TV entertainment personality/movie expert Mark S. Allen, Kim Kaplan and George Salgado of KK Productions, Lisa Burd of Burd Productions) and are deeply into a social media and publicity campaign ahead of our Indiegogo campaign launch on September 20, 2016.
Additionally, we have connected with Nick's favorite charity, the Lucky Fin Project, whose founders and supporter have already pledged their support for our film and the campaign. We plan to give a portion of proceeds from both the Ingiegogo and the film launch in 2017 to LFP. That is extremely unusual for a major motion picture - but we like to make films with out-of-the-box strategies!
One thing I've learned? The strategy for a crowdfunding campaign on Indiegogo is much different than your typical product/business launch.
